Want to grow your own lollipops from seeds in your garden this Easter season? We do it every year!

lollipops we grew from seeds

I like to add a little magic to Easter by growing lollipops from seeds. After all, it is the one day a year that they’ll actually bloom! 😉 Have some fun with the little ones and plant some jelly beans that will bloom into yummy lollipops Easter morning.

To grow a lollipop, the first thing you need to do is plant a seed! The day before Easter I take the kids outside and we pick a spot in the garden to plant our lollipop seeds, which are jellybeans. I let my daughter make the holes and plant the seeds herself. I try to pay attention to which areas she places more seeds etc. (so I can reflect that in the lollipop bloom that will follow). Then we water the seeds, and discuss how neat it is that we’re going to have lollipops the next day. We also talk about all the ways Easter is a special day, including that it is the only day lollipops will bloom.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR LOLLIPOPS BLOOM

Lollipops blooming on Easter morning

Next it’s time for the parents to sneak out and stick some lollipops in the ground for the children to find on Easter. There are a couple things to consider.

  1. Are you in an area that is likely to have ants or other bugs attack your lollipops quickly? Here in Southern California it is already (or still) warm on Easter, so our bug population is already on the rise. One year we did have ants find our jellybeans a couple days after Easter. That being said, I will probably chance it and take care of things the night before this year, because my kids watch me like little hawks lately.
  2. How old/perceptive are your children? How difficult would it be to sneak out of the house in the morning unnoticed?
  3. What are the chances you will flat out forget to put the lollipops out if you don’t do it the night before? Easter morning can be very busy.

The reason I bring these things up, is because you will need to decide when you want to put your lollipops in the ground. If you do it the night before Easter, you could be risking a bug attack. If you do it in the morning, you risk getting caught or forgetting. Use your judgement based on your yard and your children.

If something goes wrong and you can’t get your lollipops out there before your kiddos make it outside, spin a story about how they must not have bloomed yet and sneak out ASAP so they can bloom later in the day.

Make sure you’re really excited about your lollipops so your little ones will follow your lead! This is such a fun little tradition!
