Mother’s Day is a perfect occasion to remember that YOU MATTER TOO! No matter what anybody else is doing (or not doing) for you, you owe it to yourself to take some time for self care. Your children are watching! Here are some mother’s day activities to treat yourself.
Moms. We’re so busy taking care of everyone else that we often forget ourselves. This Mother’s Day, no matter how much or how little your family does for you, take the opportunity to treat yourself to a little indulgence. Whatever it is that makes you happy – do it! Can’t remember what it is you like to do anymore? Me either!! So I’ve included some suggestions below. #momlife
Children learn a lot about their self worth by watching their parents. Little girls will grow up to spend as much (or as little) time on self care and indulgence as their mothers did while they were growing up. If that isn’t a great excuse to remember to treat yourself, I don’t know what is!

WHY I NEED TO TREAT MYSELF THIS MOTHER’S DAY
The other day I told my husband that I need some time this coming week to do something just for myself – something I like to do. He responded asking me what it is that I like to do. I honestly didn’t know. And that made me mad, or sad, or maybe just confused. But truly, it’s my own fault. I’ve been so consumed with being a mom, that I’ve let my own interests take a back burner. Even the books I’ve recently read are related to childbirth, child development, and parenting!!
WHAT DO I LIKE?????
So, I sat down and gave it some thought. I thought long and hard about the things I used to enjoy doing that were still attainable with a baby still on the boob and refusing a bottle (yep – I swore this one would take a bottle, but she said no way. I can’t leave her for more than a few hours at a time.).
Here’s a list of some ideas that I think most mommas will enjoy. Indulge yourself. Treat yourself. Spoil yourself. Pamper yourself. Whatever that means to you, make sure it is something just for you!!!
MOTHER’S DAYS ACTIVITIES TO TREAT YOURSELF
1. Take a romantic bath…ALONE!!
Remember when the bath tub was for relaxing instead of a utilitarian space for cleaning little butts? Take it back for the evening. Lock the door. Wine, music and a good book are all good additions. And that brings me to my second point…
2. Buy a book and actually read it!
Let go of the guilt about how else you could be more productive, and read a good book. I personally enjoy fiction, but whatever floats your boat. The only rule is it cannot be a parenting book. It needs to be something just for you. Parenting books are great, but we’re talking about treating yourself.
Here are some of my favorite books if you’re looking for suggestions
- THE MAYFAIR WITCHES TRILOGY by ANNE RICE
- EAT PRAY LOVE by ELIZABETH GILBERT
- THE DIVINCI CODE by DAN BROWN
- THE JOY LUCK CLUB by AMY TAN
- THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE by AUDREY NIFFENGENGER
- THE HELP by KATHRYN STOCKETT
- POISON by SARAH POOLE (can’t find a link – sorry!)
As I’m listing these, I’m blown away by how many of my favorite books have become movies. I promise I read them before they were movies!
The book is always so much better. And I’m also struggling to remember my favorites, because it’s been about 5 years since I was an avid reader!!
And, just for good measure, I will link my very favorite parenting book. But you have to promise me you’ll read it some other time!!
3. Take yourself out on a date – with or without the family.
Here are some ideas. But remember – this isn’t a compromise date. This is what and where YOU want to do/see/go.
- The Movies
- YOUR favorite restaurant. No guilt about ordering a second drink or dessert!!
- A fun outing . This will depend on your location, but think about things people in your areas do on first dates. It could be mini golf, bowling, a touristy attraction (like Santa Monica Pier if you’re in the area), etc.
4. Buy yourself a gift
Not something for the home, or something the kids would enjoy. Buy something just for you!
5. Hire a maid
Not regularly, but just for a one time clean. Well heck – if you have the funds go ahead and do it regularly!! This can take some stress off your shoulders. If you’ve been behind and you can move forward from clean instead of playing catch up. OR it can give you the opportunity to spend all the time you would have been cleaning doing something more enjoyable – for you and you alone!!
I TRULY HOPE YOU WILL TAKE THE TIME TO TREAT YOURSELF THIS MOTHER’S DAY
From one momma to another, YOU deserve a little pampering. Being a mom is the hardest job I’ve ever had. Of course, it is also the most wonderful and rewarding and yada yada etc. But man-oh-man is it rough too! Whether you see Mother’s Day as a “Hallmark Holiday” or you really love it, it’s the perfect time to remember to do a little something special for our mothers (if we’re lucky enough to still have them with us), and for ourselves too!!
