CELEBRATE THE CHANGING SEASONS WITH YOUR CHILDREN!!

Welcome Summer! Make the first day/week/bit of summer into a celebration! With summer crafts, a scavenger hunt, songs and books, the kids will be delighted to dive into summer!! Let the summer fun begin.

Welcome summer with your children. Hello summer.

Summer is and has always been my favorite season. I love a hot summer night. They’re like magic. Somehow summer brings me back to the simple joys of childhood, even while I’m chasing the kids around being all responsible and everything. There’s nothing like the feeling of being tired from a fun day in the sun followed by a relaxing evening meal outdoors. Schedules are lax, there are plenty of fun outdoor activities to wear the kids out, and the heat gives us an excuse to lounge around sipping fruity drinks. What more could a gal want?

Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.

WELCOME SUMMER ACTIVITIES

We love to celebrate welcoming summer by singing a song, doing crafts, coloring, reading summer themed books, and discussing the calendar. I’ve listed lots of details for exactly what we do and how we do it below. Plus I’ve designed a FREE PRINTABLE just for welcoming summer with the kids that includes all of these details. There’s activity checklist, some activity and coloring pages, book and song recommendations/ideas, and a small scavenger hunt to help the children really see tangible changes. You can find the link at the end of the post.

As always, the scavenger hunt portion is super simple and all items can easily be found in your own yard or on a short walk around the neighborhood. It’s great for bringing your children’s attention to what changes with the seasons!

DON’T FORGET YOUR SUMMER BUCKET LIST

No start to summer is complete without your Summer Bucket List! If you haven’t already, grab your FREE poster sized Summer Bucket List Printable HERE! (Yes – you can print it at home on your printer.) If you’re not familiar with what a Summer Bucket List is, it’s basically a list of fun things you want to experience this summer. It serves as a reminder to take the time to do all the fun summer activities we all love. It also gets the family excited about what’s to come, and gives some satisfaction as you check each item off.

At the end of the season it is so much fun to look it over and talk about your favorite memories and all the fun things you did. And of course I made the printable super cute for you!

WELCOME SUMMER SONGS

Oh how my little ones love music! We love to learn a new song to kick off summer. Here are some ideas, both seasonal and patriotic! Since Independence Day is on the horizon, the beginning of summer can be a great time to start learning some patriotic songs.

  • Down By The Bay
  • You Are My Sunshine
  • Surfin’ USA by The Beach Boys
  • Star Spangled Bannner
  • This Land Is Your Land
  • Baby Shark
  • Kumbaya (I can smell the campfire as I type this)
  • Baby Bumble Bee
  • Boom Chicka Boom
  • Little Red Wagon
  • Baby Beluga

WELCOME SUMMER BOOKS

Go on a summer adventure from the comfort of your own home! Here are some great books to take you there.

  • The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister & J. Alison James
  • Mr Seahorse by Eric Carle
  • Independence Cake by Deborah Hopkinson & Giselle Potter
  • Summer’s Vacation by Lynn Plourde and Greg Couch
  • The Snail & The Whale by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
  • Ice Cream Summer by Peter Sis
  • Summer Days & Nights by Wong Herbert Yee
  • The Honeybee by Kirsten Hall and Isabelle Arsenault
  • Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz

WELCOME SUMMER CRAFTS

I usually print a few coloring and activity pages to have around for our Welcome Summer Celebration. I’ve included several in my free printable Welcome Summer!  Just click the link at the bottom of this post.

I’ve also compiled quite a few great summer crafts on my Pinterest board! You can find it HERE.

A special thanks goes out to Samantha at Doodle Art Alley for the beautiful coloring and activity pages!!

DISCUSS THE CALENDAR

Just as I do for each new season, I use the first day of summer as an opportunity to discuss the calendar. I pull it off the fridge and we discuss how a calendar works. We talk about which holidays are coming up, birthdays, special events or plans, vacations, and anything else coming up in the months of summer. We also talk about how long summer lasts, and how the weather will be changing leading up to fall.

This is also a great time to discuss Independence Day with your children. It’s a great time to go over The Pledge of Allegiance, and all other patriotic things. HERE is a great resource with a few key points to remember to share with your little ones. I’ve included a beautiful Pledge of Allegiance Printable as part of the Welcome Summer Printable. I think it’s pretty enough to hang on your child’s wall, but I designed it, so I guess I would think that. 😉

I truly hope you enjoy welcoming summer with your family. Welcoming each new season is one of our favorite things in our house.

I previously did a post on WELCOMING SPRING WITH YOUR CHILDREN, so don’t miss that as the seasons change!
